Historic Preservation
As an SOI-qualified architectural historian, I have documented and assessed historic structures and conducted consultations to assure compliance of federally funded undertakings with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, and other federal laws.
- Twenty years’ experience researching, evaluating, and documenting historic properties for federal and state tax credit projects, National Register nominations, and historic structures reports.
- Working with state and federal agency officials, representatives of tribal, state, and local governments, leaders of non-governmental organizations, and the public:
- Conducted consultations on complex projects, negotiating project-specific conditions and program alternatives, including programatic agreements.
- Provided technical advice and related assistance.
- Delivered courses, training, and presentations on historic preservation topics.
- My work in the private sector prepared me to support my team in:
- Interpreting and applying policy and regulations to develop operational guidelines and counsel staff.
- Designing, documenting, and implementing business processes to support our work.
- Developing, editing, and maintaining online manuals, forms, templates, and related documentation.

Negotiation Basics for Cultural Resource Managers
My interst in communications lead to research on business negotiations that provided the basis for Negotiation Basics for Cultural Resource Managers (April 2007: Routledge, Abingdon, UK).
The first book on negotiations written specifically for CRM professionals, this slim volume distills best practices in negotiation theory and technique. It provides methods and practices that can help assure the best outcomes in resolving conflict regarding cultural resources.
